Wallis Giunta

During the 2025/26 season, Giunta’s many roles with the Volksoper include the title role of Carmen, Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel and Niklausse in Les Contes D'Hoffmann, and she appears in concert with the Colorado Symphony and for the Hungarian State Opera. Last season she debuted with Teatro all Scala Milan in a Kurt Weill triple bill conducted by Riccardo Chailly, and for the Royal Ballet and Opera in a new production of Trouble in Tahiti. She also recently made her debut at Carnegie Hall as Anna in Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins alongside HK Gruber.

Giunta’s previous operatic highlights have included her debut at the Opéra de Lausanne as Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Dodo in Breaking the Waves for the Edinburgh Festival and Opera Comique, the title role of Carmen, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier with Oper Leipzig, Mercédès in Carmen for Oper Frankfurt, Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito and Dorabella for the Canadian Opera Company, Rosina for the Dallas Opera and Olga in The Merry Widow for the Metropolitan Opera; her previous roles for the Volksoper Wien have included Mary Magdalene in John Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and Angelina in La Cenerentola. Elsewhere she has sung Idamante in Idomeneo, Tigrane in Radamisto, Bradamante in Alcina, title role of L’enfant et les sortilèges and Maria in Piazzola’s Maria de Buenos Aires. She has also appeared at the Opera de Lyon, Opera Montpellier, Opera North, Seattle Opera, Royal Opera House Muscat and Grange Festival.

On the concert platform, highlights have included Carmen at Montreal’s Maison Symphonique, Berio's Folk Songs at the Komische Oper, Candide with the Hamburger Symphoniker conducted by Sir Jeffrey Tate, The Sound of Argentina and Handel's Solomon at the BBC Proms, Mozart's Grosse Messe with the Gewandhaus Orchester and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. She has also performed with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, in Mozart’s Die Schuldigkeit des Ersten Gebots with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, sang in the Bernstein Centenary gala at Koerner Hall, Toronto, and appeared as soloist in the acclaimed New Year concerts at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Giunta is a passionate champion of the music of Kurt Weill; especially Seven Deadly Sins, which she has performed with the Toronto Symphony, the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, the Oregon Music Festival, at Lincoln Centre,  Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Dacamera Houston and in the British premiere of the new chamber version, livestreamed globally with Opera North in 2020. She has appeared in recital with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Tivoli Festival and BBC Proms.

Giunta is a recipient of a 2013 Novick Career Advancement Grant and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Career Development Award, and has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. She is a 2013 graduate of both the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, and the Juilliard School’s Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, and was a member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio from 2009 to 2011.
