Natalya Romaniw

Soprano

  • Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw is one of Europe’s most promising young stars. Winner of the 2016 Critic’s Choice Award for Music, for her "big toned, generous, gut-wrenching performances" (Sunday Times) and her "glowing voice capable of astonishing power" (FT), she is often hailed by the British press as "the outstanding soprano of her generation" (Telegraph). She was awarded Young artist of the year at the Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2020 and Singer of the year at the Royal Philharmonic Society 2020 Awards. In the 2022/23 season, Romaniw will make her house debut in the title role Tosca at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Opera Frankfurt and return to Garsington Opera in her role debut as Ariadne Ariadne auf Naxos. On the concert platform, she will perform a number of recitals globally including at the Wigmore Hall, and under the baton of Sir Mark Elder, Verdi Requiem with the Hallé.

  • Highlights of previous seasons include her house debut at Opéra de Rouen in the title role Jenůfa, her role debut as the title role Rusalka for Garsington Opera and Edinburgh International Festival, and her return to Houston Grand Opera as Blanche Dialogues de Carmélites. Romaniw’s 2020/21 included her highly praised performance of Alice Ford Falstaff for Grange Park Opera, Mimi La Boheme for English National Opera's outdoor Drive & Live series and the title role Tosca with English National Opera at Crystal Palace Bowl for the new South Facing Festival. Previously, she has performed both Mimi La bohéme and Cio Cio San Madama Butterfly for English National Opera, title tole Tosca, Tatyana Eugene Onegin and title role Iris for Scottish Opera, Mařenka The Bartered Bride and Tatyana Eugene Onegin for Garsington Opera, the title role Iolanta and Lisa Pique Dame for Opera Holland Park, Suzel L’amico Fritz for Den Jyske Opera and title role Jenůfa for Grange Park Opera.


    On the concert platform, Romaniw has performed Strauss Vier letzte Lieder with the Hallé Barber Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and excerpts from La bohéme and Jenůfa with Ben Glassberg and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Giorgetta Il Tabarro with the Hallé at the BBC Proms, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Hallé and the world premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage Testament with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. She made her first solo recital recording in collaboration with pianist Lada Valesova, featuring repertoire by Dvořák, Janáček, Novák and Rachmaninov which received resounding praise.


    She is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in her final year. Since graduating Natalya has gone on to win many competitions including the Loveday Song Prize and the renowned Kathleen Ferrier Awards in 2012; she was a prize winner in the Houston Grand Opera Eleanor McCollum Competition; the 2017 operatic nominee in The Times breakthrough category of the Southbank Sky Arts Awards, and a finalist for the Song Prize in Cardiff Singer of the World 2009. After graduating, Natalya joined the Houston Grand Opera Studio, where she debuted roles such as Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen and Krystina in Weinburg’s The Passenger. After finishing her time with Houston Grand Opera, she returned as a guest for her role debut as Ortlinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre.
