The Hallé


  • One of the UK’s oldest orchestras, the Hallé gave its first performance in 1858 conducted by Sir Charles Hallé at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall. With conductors such as Hans Richter and Sir John Barbirolli among its previous music directors, the orchestra has premiered a number of major works including Elgar’s Symphony No.1.

  • Now under Sir Mark Elder, their Music Director since 2000, the orchestra is resident at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, and is today considered one of the finest of all British orchestras.

Shakespeare 400
Asia, July 2016
The Hallé tours China in July 2016, with programmes celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

The first time that a visiting orchestra will perform Walton’s complete Henry V in China, set alongside orchestral works by Nicolai, Berlioz and Dvorak, all inspired by Shakespeare’s plays.
