Artists announced in Royal Opera House, Covent Garden 2022/23 season

This week, the Royal Opera House announced its 2022/23 season, featuring many Intermusica and MWA artists in exciting productions at Covent Garden.

Salome 9 September — 1 October 2022

Former Jette Parker Young Artist Thomas Atkins returns to Covent Garden as Narraboth in David McVicar’s production, conducted by Alexander Soddy. Much sought-after on the international stage, Atkins can also be seen in London this summer as Lensky in Eugene Onegin with Opera Holland Park.

Also a former Jette Parker Young Artist, Simon Shibambu now performs there regularly as a guest, and will sing the role of First Soldier in this revival.

La bohème 14 October — 17 December 2022

Marking his Royal Opera House debut following a string of international successes, rising star Kevin John Edusei conducts Puccini La bohème, opening on 14 October with nine performances to follow until 17 November. 

Evelino Pidò remains one of the leading interpreters of bel canto repertoire worldwide, and will return to the Royal Opera House to conduct La bohème after his most recent triumphs with Don Pasquale and La fille du régiment in 2019. Pidò will open on 24 October, with 5 performances to follow until 13 November.

Freddie de Tommaso makes his highly anticipated debut as Rodolfo in Richard Jones’ production from 24 October – 5 November, with returning favourite David Junghoon Kim performing on 28 October and 13 November.

Danielle de Niese will return to one of her most infamous roles as Musetta. Described as an 'Unforgettable portrayal' The Stage and 'Riveting to watch' Opera Today, she will appear for six performances opening on 14 October.

Alcina 8 — 24 November 2022

Mary Bevan makes a return to the mainstage of the Royal Opera House as Morgana in a new Richard Jones production of Handel Alcina, conducted by Christian Curnyn.

Tosca 28 November — 21 December 2022

After his triumphant debut as Cavaradossi in 2021, Freddie de Tommaso returns in Jonathan Kent’s beloved production conducted by Daniel Oren from 12 – 21 December.

Die Zauberflöte 16 December 2022 — 28 January 2023

David McVicar’s production features exciting role debuts for Jacquelyn Stucker as Pamina and Filipe Manu as Tamino. Directly following his company debut at the Paris Opera, Brindley Sherratt brings his 'sonorous' Sarastro to Covent Garden, conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev / Richard Hetherington.

Tannhäuser 29 January — 16 February 2023

Titans of the operatic world Lise Davidsen and Gerald Finley join forces in Tim Albery’s production of Tannhäuser as Elisabeth and Wolfram von Eisenbach, conducted by Sebastian Weigle.

Rusalka 21 February – 7 March 2023

Following his role debut at the Teatro Real in 2020, after reviews commented on his 'beautiful lyric voice' and 'impeccable phrasing and legato in Czech' OperaWire, David Butt Philip sings The Prince in Natalie Abrahami and Ann Yee’s new contemporary staging of Dvořák’s fairy tale, conducted by Semyon Bychkov.

Turandot 10 March — 13 April 2023

Celebrated soprano Anna Pirozzi returns to Covent Garden in one of her signature roles as Turandot in Andrei Serban’s colourful production, conducted by Antonio Pappano and Paul Wynne Griffiths from 10 to 25 March 2023.

Innocence 17 April–4 May 2023

Christopher Purves will star as the The Father-in-law in Kaija Saariaho’s ground-breaking new opera Innocence, which will be making it’s much anticipated UK premiere. Jointly commissioned by the Festival International d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence, Royal Opera House, Finnish National Opera, San Francisco Opera and Dutch National Opera, Purves will open on 17 April, with four later performances.

Aida 5 - 23 May 2023

A favourite and regular of the Royal Opera House, star mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča will appear in Robert Carsen’s production of Aida as Amneris, a role she also performs with the Wiener Staatsoper earlier in the season.

Brindley Sherratt sings the Doctor in Berg’s operatic masterpiece, in a in a vivid new staging by award-winning director Deborah Warner and conducted by Antonio Pappano.

Il trovatore 21 June – 2 July

Gregory Kunde, after performing to great critical acclaim in the title role of Otello at the Royal Opera House in 2019, will return in the role of Manrico Il trovatore. Conducted by Antonio Pappano, performances will open on 21 June, with a further four until 2 July.
